History

Mead Middle School's history dates back to the early 1900s. In 1911, the school was originally founded as Union High School.

Built with bricks fired locally in Mead, the construction of still-standing Mead Union High School building started in 1926 after voters living in the Mead School District approved the $35,000 construction project. The school was designed by George M. Rasque, who was known for designing other local school buildings in the period.[1] The Union High School building still stands today and serves as one of the components of the Mead Middle School complex. Mead Union High became Mead High in 1933, and the building was a high school until 1972 when a new Mead High School opened. After the new high school opened, the building was renamed Mead Junior High School and housed 8-9 graders from 1972 until 1997, when Mt. Spokane, the district's second high school opened. Since then, the school has been called Mead Middle School and served 7th and 8th graders.
